Small Tests, Big Impact: Reflections on our Yateley PSA Screening Event
- by Tim Clark
There is a particular kind of pride that comes with serving the Yateley community, but today, that pride feels a little deeper. We have just wrapped up our latest Prostate Cancer (PSA) Screening event, and the turnout was a testament to how much our neighbors value their health and their families.
In a single session, we saw 178 men step up to take charge of their wellbeing. While a simple blood test might seem minor, the clarity it provides can be life-changing.
Breaking Down the Numbers
The results from our session provide a sobering but vital snapshot of our local health:
148 Green Results: These men received the news that their PSA levels are within the normal range for their age. They’ve been given a clear schedule for when to return for a follow-up in one, two, or three years.
13 Amber Results: These results sat just above the normal limit. We’ve advised these gentlemen to book a follow-up with their GP to keep a close eye on any changes.
17 Red Results: These are the results that remind us why we do this. A “Red” result indicates a level outside the guideline range. While it isn’t a diagnosis of cancer, it is a crucial “early warning” that requires an urgent GP consultation and potential referral to a specialist.
Why This Matters
For those 17 men in the “Red” category, this event may well be the turning point that caught a serious issue before it became a crisis. Early detection is the most powerful tool we have in the fight against prostate cancer. Seeing our community come together to tackle this head-on is exactly why the Yateley & District Lions Club exists.
We Can’t Do This Alone
Events like this don’t happen by accident. They are the direct result of every raffle ticket you buy, every burger you purchase at our summer fete, and every donation dropped into our buckets. Your generosity funded these 178 tests. However, the demand for this work is growing, and our “pride” of Lions needs more paws on the ground. To keep providing life-saving screenings, supporting local youth, and helping those in need, we need you.
Join the Pride
If you’ve ever looked at a community project and thought, “I’d like to help with that,“ now is the time. Joining the Yateley & District Lions isn’t just about meetings; it’s about making things happen. Whether you have a few hours a month or a specific skill to share, you can help us ensure that next year, we can test even more than 178 men.
Help us serve Yateley. Help us save lives.
